Faculty of Chemistry

It is hard to find a sector of the economy or human activity that doesn't use the achievements of chemical science. Development of the country and society depends on a highly professional and responsible application of achievements carried out by a well-qualified specialist.

The Faculty of Chemistry opened its doors to students in 1965 — the year Donetsk State University (now Donetsk National University) was founded. The faculty, its departments, scientific schools were created thanks to Academicians of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine L.M. Litvinenko, R.V. Kucher, S.M. Baranov, M.V. Mokhosoev, Professor Emeritus of DonNU I.O. Shevchuk.

The Faculty of Chemistry offers Bachelor’s programme in “Chemistry” and Specialist’s and Master’s programmes in “Analytical Chemistry”, “Biochemistry”, “Chemistry”, and “Physical Chemistry”. After successful completion of 4 years of studies graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Chemistry degree. After 5 years they are awarded Specialist’s or Master’s degree.

The Faculty of Chemistry provides full-time, part-time and external studies.

Five specializations in the fundamental areas of chemistry are available for our students: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, as well as five specializations in applied areas: chemical ecology, biochemistry of sports, computer chemistry, chemistry of drugs and medicines, food chemistry.

The Faculty of Chemistry offers postgraduate studies in:

02.00.01 — “Inorganic Chemistry”,

02.00.02 — “Analytical Chemistry”,

02.00.03 — “Organic Chemistry”,

02.00.04 — “Physical Chemistry”,

02.00.06 — “Macromolecular Chemistry”,

02.00.15 — “Chemical Kinetics and Catalysis”.

The leading scientists of Ukrainian Academy of Science institutes take an active part in students’ preparation. They give lectures, hold seminars and laboratory classes, supervise preparation of research papers and diploma works, practical training, postgraduate studies. The faculty scientists work closely with leading universities of Ukraine, Russian Federation, Poland, Germany, Spain, Portugal, UK, USA.

The faculty actively cooperates with Academy of Sciences institutes and their departments that relocated from Donetsk to other research centres of Ukraine:

  • Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Kyiv;
  • Palladin Institute of Biochemistry, Kyiv;
  • Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Kyiv;
  • Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry, Kyiv;
  • L.M. Litvinenko Institute of Physical-Organic Chemistry and Coal Chemistry, Lviv branch.

Among our graduates there are 25 PhD and 245 Candidates of Science (including 21 citizens from different countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and America). Among them there are rector, heads and deputy heads of research institutes, faculty deans, heads of faculty departments, professors, associate professors, researchers. Today the majority of the faculty teachers are its graduates.

The faculty has well-established international relations, having concluded numerous agreements on cooperation.

Universal and deep knowledge students receive at the faculty contributes to their easy adaptation and effective work in various fields.
