Department of Biophysical Chemistry and Nanobiotechnologies

Department of Biophysical Chemistry and Nanobiotechnologies

The Scientific School of the Department of Biophysical Chemistry and Nanobiotechnologies was founded by Academician R. Kucher. The current scope of the study covers chain-radical oxidation of organic compounds with molecular oxygen in the aquatic medium and development of safe bioantioxidants (Doctor of Chemistry, Professor O. Shendryk); creation of new active radical generation systems for wastewater treatment processes (Dr. Of Chem. Sciences, Professor I. Opeida, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Senior Researcher O. Kushch). Another direction of the department’s activity is the synthesis of epoxy-inorganic nanocomposites and copolymers and establishing a relationship between structure and properties of the obtained materials (Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor S. Zhyltsova, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor V. Melnychenko).

History of the department

The Department of Biophysical Chemistry and Nanobiotechnologies was created by the union of the Departments of Biochemistry and Physical Chemistry, each of which has a long history since the foundation of the Faculty of Chemistry of Donetsk State University. The acting head of the department is Assistant Professor, Candidate of Chemical Sciences Svitlana Zhyltsova. The department has a highly professional teaching staff consisting of professors and associate professors, senior teachers and assistants, the vast majority of whom are graduates of the faculty. The department performs work in three main areas: educational process, scientific research, and methodical work.

The department trains specialists in educational programs “Biochemistry” and “Physical chemistry” of the specialty 102 “Chemistry”.

Educational programs

Specialty 102 “Chemistry”

Educational Program “Biochemistry” (Bachelor’s Degree)

Training of specialists capable of predicting the properties of chemicals that are components of biological systems of different levels, conducting experimental studies and interpreting their results (based on the  knowledge of the basic laws of chemistry, chemical elements properties and their compounds of organic and inorganic nature, modern methods of synthesis and analysis).

Educational program Chemistry (Bachelor’s Degree)

Training of specialists capable of predicting the properties of chemicals, conducting experimental studies and interpreting their results (based on the knowledge of the basic laws of chemistry, chemical elements properties and their compounds, modern methods of material synthesis and analysis).

Educational Program Biochemistry (Master’s Degree)

According to the latest scientometric data, biochemistry is the most powerful interdisciplinary hub among the nature, life and health sciences. It is responsible for about 50 % of new knowledge and innovations, aimed at increasing the comfort level of civilization and ensuring its sustainable development. For over 50 years the educational program «Biochemistry» of  Vasyl’ Stus Donetsk National University has been the only specialized program in Ukraine, training biochemists with expertise in high-tech branches of pharmacy, biotechnology, bio-, biomedical and genetic engineering.

Educational Program “Physical chemistry” (Master’s Degree)

Physical chemistry answers a wide range of important questions. You’ll be able to do it too! The training combines theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills of physical-chemical science and methods of computational chemistry for a better understanding of the behavior of molecules and materials, features and patterns of the processes. Studying fundamental and applications of physical chemistry, working in scientific laboratories are the key to a successful career as a researcher, qualified specialist at universities, institutes, enterprises of pharmaceutical, food, chemical industries etc.
