Department of Biophysics and Physiology

Department of Biophysics and Physiology

The goal of the Department of Biophysics and Physiology is to train highly qualified specialists in the field of biology.
The Department of Biophysics and Physiology aims at providing students with basic (bachelor’s degree) and advanced (master’s degree) training of biologists with specialization in the field of human biophysics and physiology, who have knowledge of biophysical mechanisms of living systems’ functioning and are able to use modern instrumental and informational technologies and conduct a research and accomplish practical tasks in the field of their professional activity.
The department provides basic knowledge in the field of zoology, the functioning of natural ecosystems, parasitology, ichthyology, sensory systems and morphophysiology, zootoxinology, and other special sections of zoology. In the course of study students undergo educational, industrial, assistant and research training practices. Particular attention is paid to the skills of working with living organisms, studying their life and to understanding their role as biocenotic connections. The department also provides the opportunity to obtain a second higher education at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas (Lithuania).

Head of the Department

Dotsenko Olha

Associate Professor of the Department of Biophysics and Physiology, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor

History of the department

The Department of Biophysics was founded at the Faculty of Biology of Donetsk State University in 1995 on the basis of the Department of Artificial Intelligence (headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Shevchenko A.).
On July 1, 2020, the Department of Biophysics and Physiology merged with the Department of Zoology.
The Department of Zoology was established in 1965. Its founder and first head was Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Zinaida Usova, who made a great contribution to the formation of the Department of Zoology and the Faculty of Biology as a whole. In 1968, a postgraduate course was opened under it. The first graduate students were A. Riazantseva, V. Skliar, O. Panchenko, M. Yaroshenko. Three of her students defended their doctoral theses. The scientific topic of the department concerned a number of groups of invertebrates and mouse rodents of Donetsk Oblast.

Educational programs

Specialty 091 “Biology”

The purpose of the Biology educational program is to train highly qualified specialists capable of carrying out research and production activities on the study and conservation of wildlife and the use of biological systems. Preparation for independent activity, which requires extensive knowledge in the field of biology and advanced professional specialization, mastering the skills of research and scientific-pedagogical work.

Educational program “Biology” “Master”

Biology is the science of the future. That is why the most demanded are the specialists who have modern methods of rational use of biological resources and knowledge about the processes of biological production, planning and conducting research in bioengineering, biomedical, biotechnological and environmental activities. Also, our biologists are exploring the possibility of restoring bioresources, recycling organic waste using biotechnology. That is why the graduates of Vasyl’ Stus Biological Faculty of DonNU have significant employment opportunities in various fields of production and science.

Specialty 101 “Ecology”

Educational Program “Ecology” (“Bachelor”)

The Ecology educational program is aimed at developing a complex of knowledge, skills and competencies for higher education students to apply in professional activities in the field of ecology, environmental protection and balanced use of nature. Our ecological students are creating a new ecological environment of independent Ukraine. If you want to learn how to implement environmental management, implement environmental policy in the field of nature protection, conduct environmental monitoring, master modern methods of operation and design of environmental protection systems, modern knowledge of environmental law and inspection, then the Faculty of Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry!

Educational program “Ecology” (“Master”)

The program is based on scientific results, with regard to the current state of ecology and other natural sciences and is aimed at acquiring the skills and knowledge of ecology and environmental protection. The program involves students mastering basic fundamental disciplines that are important for understanding natural processes, building the competencies needed to monitor, research and manage natural and anthropogenic processes.
